“I am nearly 50 years old, and have been training off and on in martial arts for most of my life. In that time, I have met some amazing people but I have also seen many concerning things. Martial arts can be the closest thing to a cult you may ever see if you’re not careful. So when I was looking for a place to enroll my kids and heard about this new gym who had an instructor that came from Nevada with dozens of people following him you can bet I was skeptical before being very thankful. Battleborn BJJ & MMA is different, and an incredible martial arts school led by an exceptional instructor, Kelly Anundson. His amazing cadre of professionals also includes his very skilled wife Wendy and dedicated staff members Cam Sandoval, Billy Elliott, Kevin Schroder and many others. Kelly Anundson's expertise as a world champion black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and collegiate wrestler who competed in the UFC and Bellator speaks volumes about his skill and dedication. But what truly sets him apart is his passion for teaching and mentoring. Not only has Coach Kelly created an environment that fosters personal growth and discipline for adult martial artists like myself, but he has also mastered the art of developing children. He instills the right values, maintains discipline, and makes learning fun for kids, which is a rare and invaluable combination. I trust VERY few people in this world around my children, but I trust Coach Kelly implicitly. Both my daughter and my young son train daily and love every minute of it. His character and values have never wavered in or out of the gym, and his patience with my youngest is nearly Herculean. He and his wife are like an extended part of our family, and many of the wonderful people at their gym have become dear friends. Kelly's willingness to share his skills and knowledge with all levels of students, from beginners to advanced, is truly remarkable. He embodies the spirit of martial arts and inspires greatness in his students. He understands an older practitioner like myself may need a modified version of the move to be successful and he takes the time to show it without making me feel incapable or limited. It’s these little things that make such a difference when choosing the right instructor. “I began training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at a Muay Thai/BJJ gym in Winston Salem in September 2021 at the age of 40 years old. I was informed of a gym in High Point and the coach/owner had approximately 12 men and women move from Nevada to High Point just so they could continue to train under him. That sparked my interest because that’s quite a commitment from those people to their coach. I was nearing the end of my “contract” at my gym and decided to go try out Battleborn. I spoke to the owner and coach Kelly Anundson. I told him my history and how I was nearing the end of my contract. He told me he wasn’t in the business of stealing students from other gyms, so he encouraged me to try some trial classes, finish out my contract and then make a decision. Immediately I knew this was a man of character. I went to my trial classes and loved the culture there. I completed my trial and left my old gym as fast as I could to join at Battleborn. Coach Kelly has an outstanding amount of knowledge and teaches to the lowest common denominator so even I can understand it. The coaches consist of males and females with a variety of body types and sizes so if you have limitations due to your body type they can relate and are able to show you an alternate technique. The mats are always clean and the culture is extremely welcoming. They offer more than jiu jitsu. They offer kickboxing, Muay Thai, sparring, mma classes and children’s classes.
