“My son has been with checkmat in the 4-6 year old group since around November. It has helped him to be more confident in himself and push past adversity and step outside his comfort zone. He loves coming to class and he really enjoys learning from his instructors. He is determined to continue to do better each and everyday. When we are not at class, he is at home practicing his moves and teaching his baby cousins how to bear crawl, duck walk, and shrimp.”

“We came to Charlotte visiting family for a few weeks this summer. My daughter’s coach in Phoenix recommended Checkmat Charlotte. I sent an email to Micheal sharing that I’d like my daughter to come to class a few times to get some reps in over the summer. I planned to call as we expected a delayed response. In less than 24 hours Michael responded with options for my 11 year old to get practice in. We texted and made a game plan based on the schedule. The drive was quite far from my family’s home so we opted for the 6am option to beat the traffic (I know 😴!). It was so worth the drive! My daughter was able to spar for an hour and apply what she’s been learning with a few students that are yellow belts or higher and specifically an 11 year old that Micheal asked to come in (VERY EARLY!) ensuring she could practice with someone her age. The student was very skilled. Michael provided my daughter live feedback and coaching as she sparred helping to connect the dots to the skills and techniques she’s been learning back at Checkmat in Phoenix. She was not happy on our 40 min drive to class but felt inspired and confident as we drove home. We came back today (June 14) and she was able to practice with Michael’s son who is a little older and a higher belt. She again got in an hour of sparring and received tips and strategies on a few areas she’s been struggling with. Just two hours of sparring at Checkmat Charlotte and I believe my daughter will go back ready to compete and give her teammates back in Phoenix a run for their money! We will definitely be back on our next extended visit to Charlotte. We’re trying to convince my niece to join!”

“Checkmat Charlotte is a wonderful program! Checkmat is organized into different categories; 4-6 year old, 7-13, adult women’s & men’s classes etc. Class times are catered to the age of the class. Also, they have certain weekends they host their house scrimmage matches that you can sign your child up for and have them experience live competition in a small safe fun environment with food, drinks, music & of course Ju Jitsu! Furthermore, I love the fact they give you a free trial when you are deciding on signing up to see if it is something you would like to do and grow as apart of their program. All of the instructors are very knowledgeable, kind and patient. Coach Allen was very informative, communicative, clear, friendly, and amazing from the start. Being new to Charlotte, it was great finding a diverse program for my 6year old that embodies a rich culture built on structure and discipline, while still making sure the kids enjoy themselves. Checkmat Charlotte is located in an accessible area, and the gym is intimate and kept up well. I highly recommend this program especially for your little ones!”
