The staff demonstrates outstanding leadership and creates an environment that encourages every student to be their best—on and off the mats. The facility is always clean and well-maintained, and the class sizes are just right. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a solid martial arts program rooted in discipline, respect, and encouragement!”
“As one of the inaugural students at GB Scottsdale in 2015, my journey here has been significant. After a decade of dedication, I earned my black belt. My children also trained alongside me, and I've poured my sweat and blood onto these mats. Most importantly, I forged lifelong friendships with fellow students and instructors. To say I was invested in this academy would be an understatement. However, after ten years, I and many of my teammates recently made the painful decision to leave. This was not a choice we took lightly. It stemmed directly from observing the ownership's consistently poor treatment of dedicated staff, loyal students, and even the volunteers who generously gave their time. The most recent example being a highly respected senior female student and volunteer coach who was treated with utmost disrespect. While the ownership promotes a message of "family," the reality I observed was different. There appears to be a revolving door of instructors, employees, and volunteers. The common factor in this high turnover, from my perspective, has been the ownership's approach. The focus seems to have shifted from community to commerce, with business practices that can feel impersonal and profit-driven. For those considering where to train, I offer my story as a cautionary tale. I spent a decade here, and my decision to walk away was one of the hardest I've had to make. I would encourage prospective students to look for a school where the values of community and respect are not just spoken, but are demonstrated from the top down.”
“Gracie Barra Scottsdale is truly a gem—if I could give it 10 stars, I would! From the moment you walk in, you feel welcomed into an incredible community built on respect, discipline, and encouragement. The professors and staff are absolutely outstanding, especially when it comes to working with kids. Everyone—from the professors to the amazing school manager, Amanda—is patient, kind, and fully committed to helping little ones thrive. They don’t just teach martial arts; they nurture confidence, discipline, and camaraderie in a way that’s truly inspiring. For adults, the experience is just as exceptional. Whether you’re stepping onto the mats for the first time or training for high-level competition, the professors meet you where you are with unwavering support and expert guidance. It’s rare to find a place where beginners and seasoned practitioners alike feel equally challenged, supported, and motivated—but Gracie Barra Scottsdale nails it. What sets this school apart even more is the incredible sense of community. Everyone here is respectful, humble, and uplifting—on and off the mats. The school regularly hosts social events like group hikes, which only strengthens the bond between members and builds a true family atmosphere. Special shoutout to Professors Gavin and Amanda, whose leadership, passion, and dedication shine through in everything they do. And a huge thank you to all the other professors and team members who make this place so special. Training here has been a positively life-changing experience for my family and me. I wholeheartedly recommend Gracie Barra Scottsdale to anyone—kids, adults, athletes, or complete beginners. It’s not just a martial arts school—it’s a second home.”
“If you are even the slightest bit curious about Jiu Jitsu, don’t wait around. Come in and check it out. The only thing holding you back is you. I was nervous to walk into this gym on the first day. I felt awkward, uncomfortable and vulnerable. Immediately walking through the door I was greeted by the staff with a smile and a warm welcome. I was not pressured or intimidated. Right away I could feel the positive energy. Every person in the gym; staff, instructors, and students were eager to meet me and welcome me to the gym. This place is more than a gym; it’s a family. You are cheered on and encouraged to learn and be your best self. There is no bullying or negativity. Every single day, I am learning, growing, and am seeing improvement in my abilities, my confidence, and my self esteem. I truly can’t begin to express how elated I am that I finally decided to walk through these doors that first day. My only regret is that I waited so long. I have always struggled with anxiety, depression, confidence and self esteem. This place is slowly changing that. Stop by. Try just 1 class. I guarantee you won’t regret it. Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”
“The team of Gavin and Amanda are great. Our 5 year old is loving it. This is by far the best location she’s trained at across North America. The kids are attentive and follow instruction. In comparison to other locations, our child’s skill level has been much better. It’s a true testament to the instruction here. Definitely a place I’d recommend to have kids learn Jiu Jitsu!”
