“Years ago, I promised myself that I would write a review for this dojo only after earning my blue belt. I wanted to ensure I had ample time to understand the techniques, test their effectiveness, and gain a thorough understanding of the curriculum and its rationale. This way, I could also form an accurate view of the coaches, the people, and the overall environment at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu NY. If you read nothing else in this review and simply want confirmation that joining is the right decision, I can assure you it is. This place is a gem. You will learn self-defense in a safe environment and work with great people who know what they are talking about. The dojo was founded by Sensei Mike, who has been training for over 30 years. He received his black belt from Relson Gracie and occasionally trains with Rickson Gracie. When you step into the dojo, you are greeted with a wealth of knowledge that is rare to find. You will be working with people who love to help you improve, no matter your level. Many members come from diverse backgrounds like boxing, wrestling, and judo. What sets this dojo apart is its focus on teaching you how to protect yourself and think rationally and ethically in real combat scenarios. To make your experience as a white belt as smooth as possible, here is some advice I would have given myself when I started: Be teachable: The coaches are there to help you improve and answer your questions. If you listen to them, you will get better! Attend consistently: We are all busy, but if you can attend at least three sessions a week, you will see significant improvement. Enjoy the process: Don’t worry too much about promotions. Focus on getting better and having fun. Promotions will come when you are ready. Ask for clarification: If a move isn’t clear, don’t hesitate to ask the coaches to repeat it. Ask questions: Even about the smallest things. This will help you iron out errors and make small adjustments that significantly improve your game. Focus on breathing and technique: As a beginner, you may overexert yourself and rely on brute strength. Over time, you will learn to rely on technique and proper breathing, which will allow you to roll longer and think clearly during fight simulations. Leave your frustrations off the mat: If you're upset, having a rough day, or feel like you have something to prove, don't take it out on the mat. Safety is a priority for everyone, including you. Being a good student means being a trustworthy partner when practicing moves with others. Practice good hygiene: Wearing a clean Gi, not walking barefoot off the mats, and ensuring personal cleanliness are essential to prevent infections and ensure a safe training environment for everyone. I'm sure there's more to say, but this review is already quite detailed. If you've ever wanted to give jiu-jitsu a try, you're in good hands here.”

“Michael Casey is one of the most dedicated and insightful instructors I have ever met. Which is to say nothing of his BJJ pedigree, and the DECADES he has spent learning directly from the Gracie family. I cannot recommend training with Michael highly enough.”

“First and foremost I’d like to say Mike Casey is absolutely amazing I am blessed to have the luxury of being affiliated with Watershed BJJ were I currently attend as a student in Fredericksburg, Va under Shawn Maines who is an absolute pleasure to call my coach, Mentor, & friend! Mike Casey had recently came to the Fredericksburg area and I was fortunate enough to attend a seminar and I’m am so grateful for the amazing knowledge that Mike was kind enough to share with everyone at the seminar! With the help of two absolutely amazing inspirational individuals in Mike a Shawn after 5 months of training BJJ I had recently decided to go out of my comfort zone an compete in competition in back to back weeks . I managed to get 2nd place in 130 pound No-GI & the following week I had to be bumped up to 154 pound division weighing roughly 120 pounds in the GI with all odds against me I managed to secure the submission with 9 seconds on the clock ! Needless to say if you ever have the opportunity take my advice and please do yourself a favor an seize the opportunity to train with the absolute best in the art ! Thank you Mike you are an absolute legend and a inspiration in my eyes 🙏🥋.”

“I've had the privilege of seeing Prof. Casey teach on multiple occasions as well as talk with him about his history in BJJ. He's a great guy and his instructions are presented in a way that is easy and valuable for beginners through upper belts. I recommend attending any class or seminar you can under Prof. Casey.”

“I always enjoy training with Mike Casey. He has a wealth of knowledge and continuously seeks more knowledge and a deeper understanding of Jiu-jitsu that he shares openly and generously, not only with his "local" students but with those of us who attend his seminars. He is a skilled instructor, breaking the information down into consumable portions, leading to both a physical and a mental understanding of the concepts. Highly recommend!”
