“I can’t recommend Heavy Mettle Jiu-Jitsu enough. I joined HMJJ a little over a month ago after training at another school for quite a while. From the moment I walked through the door I’ve been welcomed like a friend by everyone. Derek and his team of instructors are top notch, and have created a sense of community that’s apparent in every class. The atmosphere is one of consideration, encouragement and challenge, any egos are checked at the door, and training partners understand that we all start our training at the same place, all of which provide opportunity to develop skill and get a great workout. As someone who started training Jiu-Jitsu in their 50s, I’m confident that this sport isn’t just for younger practitioners, and if you’re just starting, you’ll wish you started sooner, but you’re never too old to begin. The academy schedule also offers multiple opportunities to train throughout the week, including Saturday and Sunday. “Really an awesome place to learn jiu-jitsu, get a great workout, and make friends for life. What I love most about Heavy Mettle is how everyone is treated with respect, we all take care of each other, and egos are left outside. The instructors are top notch - every one of them dedicated to helping the students learn and grow. None more than Derek Stevens, the owner, who teaches most of the classes. Derek's curriculum based approach to teaching is incredible. The classes are thoroughly planned months in advance with the flexibility to modify the instruction based on new information all the time. Derek introduces the material gradually week after week over the course of months, building on what was previously taught. This results in so much better understanding and retention. I have gained a much deeper understanding of many top and bottom positions in two years at Heavy Mettle Jiu-Jitsu Academy, than I did in five years at various other schools. Finally, maybe more important than anything else, Derek goes out of his way to maintain a very clean and hygienic facility. I feel super fortunate to have the opportunity to train at Heavy Mettle and look forward to doing so for a long time.”

“My son has been training here for 8 months in the 8-12 year old group. This academy has done wonders for his self esteem, focus, physical fitness, resiliency, and confidence. I HIGHLY recommend this place for anyone thinking about getting their kids into this type of activity. I have been training here for 5 months. The culture here is great. The gym is clean. The other members are supportive and a great group of people. The instructors are knowledgeable and clearly committed to success. I’ve started here in my 40’s. It’s not too late to start if you’re considering it. Training partners are great and look out for each other in training. Nobody is looking to crush each other which is good considering I have to go to my job after training. I’m not one to leave many reviews, but I can’t say enough good things about Heavy Mettle.
