“Of the four gyms I’ve trained at over the course of seven years, JM Modern Jiu Jitsu is definitely the best. I was there for a period of three years and saw the most improvement in my game during those three years by far. For starters, the skill level of the people there is very high. Everyone from people that just got their blue belts to the most seasoned black belts felt like a killer which is a direct reflection of the culture that Coach Josh cultivates. Coach Josh’s coaching philosophy felt like a blend of instilling confidence in his students by building a bulletproof mindset while also showing you how to not over complicate the sport. His saying that, “jiu jitsu is like a Chinese finger trap,” changed how I think about jiu jitsu forever, as well as the many other things I learned over my three year period there. Secondly, Coach Josh is always trying to improve the gym or his teaching style in some way rather than stagnating and feeling like it’s the same class every time you go. The improvement oriented mindset is one that is again reflected in the other members of the gym. I’ve never been to a gym before where groups of people are meeting up before class to talk about and work on new techniques. Finally, the other members are all good people that want you to improve as much as they want to improve. Some of the best insights I had while training came from talking about the previous round with the person I just rolled with because of everybody’s willingness to help you improve, even if that means you’d get the better of the next time. If you’re on the fence about going to a class at JM Modern, TAKE THE PLUNGE. You will absolutely not regret it and be glad that you did.
