I recently had the privilege to train at Standard Jiu Jitsu, and I must say, it was a truly remarkable experience. Coach Souders is incredibly knowledgeable in the area of Jiu Jitsu skill development and he is, without a doubt, building a team of master problem solvers through an ecological approach to training. At Standard Jiu Jitsu, from day one you will be working with top-notch training partners to learn the game of Jiu Jitsu as a whole. Whether you are participating in the Foundations, All-Levels, or Competition Team class, everyone is friendly, welcoming, and eager to help each other improve. You will find that players' skills quickly develop through exploration and self-discovery. At Standard Jiu Jitsu, you won’t find any spoon-feeding of confusing techniques, just grappling skills that rapidly develop as movement solutions emerge through exploration while working on simplified tasks. As players progress in their skill development, those skills continue to compound and pay dividends towards reaching the end goal. Coach Souders end goal is for you to “Learn the most efficient way to immobilize a body as it relates to breaking and strangulation.” In working towards this outcome, all classes are run with complete efficiency in mind. You won’t be wasting your time doing push-ups, burpees, or drilling here. Classes are designed to help you create complex behaviors from working on simple task focused games while using live resistance 100% of the time. As you can imagine, this approach provides you with immediate gains physically, mentally, and strategically. Overall, I can't recommend Standard Jiu Jitsu enough. If you're looking for a great place to train with a phenomenal coach and great training partners, this is the place for you. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced practitioner, you'll find everything you need to take your skills to the next level. I'm truly grateful for having had the opportunity to learn from Coach Souders and I am sure you will be as well. Current class offerings: Foundations: Mon - Thurs 6PM to 7PM All Levels: Mon - Thurs 12PM to 1PM & 7PM to 8PM Competition Team: Mon - Thurs 8PM to 9PM & Sat 10AM to 11AM Community Open Mat: Fri 6PM to 8PM & Sat 11AM to 1PM Recommended Reads to gain a greater understanding of the Ecological Approach: How We Learn to Move: A Revolution in the Way We Coach & Practice Sports Skills (Rob Gray) Learn to Optimize Movement: Harnessing the Power of the Athlete-Environment Relationship (Rob Gray)

At the end of the rainbow is the best Brazilian Jiu-jitsu school in the DC area. I've been taking jiujitsu since 2004. When I moved here in 2016, I had a hard time finding a school that matched the intensity and great training of my previous academy in New York ..... until I went to Standard BJJ in Rockville. Greg is one of the best instructors I have ever trained with and easily the best one in the DC area. His students consistently win tournaments and it's easy to see why. It is a great training program, and you get better every time you train (while also getting the best body you've ever had). It's been an honor and a privilege to train at such a great academy with great people.

Dropped in for 12PM Class. Filled out a digital waiver and jumped into class. 1 hour of “game based” rolling. No drilling. Friendly and laid back atmosphere. Very fun way to train!

i come to standard whenever i am in Maryland for work and i will never train anywhere else in the state. Greg has helped my game so much. I owe him so much. The people that train there are just humble and hard working and everyone is just trying to complete their tasks at hand and its kind of refreshing. With this style of training its not really about "winning" the round as much as it is achieving your task as many times as you can. What Greg has built is exceptional and I am very lucky I get to spend as much time there as I do

I’m so happy that I took the opportunity to visit this school! Greg is an extremely gifted instructor with a gift for task simplification that benefits everyone that attends his training. It’s clear that his training methods do an amazing job of getting his students to train their attention on the tasks that really matter when it comes to being effective grapplers. Everyone I trained with clearly understood the game of jiu jitsu and how to play it. Greg also took time to talk to me about his training and answered questions afterwards as well. If you’re on the fence about dropping in, do it! You won’t regret it. I’ll definitely be back!
