The last time I came through Williamsburg for a class was 7 years ago at their previous location and I knew instinctively that when I visited again, it was definitely going to be at studio 360. “Studio360, simply, is an excellent place to train. With regard to their jiujitsu and submission grappling programs, Coaches Mike, Marissa, John, and Maira are incredible assets to the students. Coaches Marissa and Maira as well as the assistant subcoaches create a fun and safe learning environment for the kiddos. I have never seen (or heard) of a child enduring a grievous injury during kid’s class. Studio360 is safe for your child. Coach Mike teaches his jiujitsu and submission grappling classes primarily using the constraints-led approach (CLA) also known as the “Ecological Model” of jiujitsu instruction that is emerging as a superior method to learning movement skills. But he also recognizes that skill gaps can be bridged through more traditional means with both static, dynamic, and resisted drilling. Studio360 also offers a comprehensive judo program. In the judo classes, coaches Michael (former Team USA Judo), Gokita Sensei (Tokai Judo Uni. graduate), and Willie (over 25+ years experience) all teach in unique ways. Coach Willie uses a blend of static and moving uchikomi (a form of drilling unique to Judo) to develop a base of fundamental movements which Coach Michael swings in thereafter to coach the randori (technical sparring) applications. Gokita Sensei offers the unique Japanese perspective on Judo, one of economy of movement and exploitation of the opponent’s movement as opposed to the strength and athletics-based Judo styles more common in Western countries. The Thai boxing classes are incredible also. Coach Mike and coach Tarkan both are excellent and technical strikers, each with their own laundry list of accomplishments. Classes are well-paced, structured, with plenty of time for meaningful reps. The greatest aspect about Studio360 is the culture of the gym. This is a family-friendly gym, but it is emphatically NOT social hour. All the students are laser-focused on their training, taking care to not injure their training partners, and get quality work. This is NOT a school where you worship the instructor. This is a school where the work and the process are the objective. This is a school where, if you earnestly want to get better at the martial arts, and you understand that you, the athlete, are responsible for your outcomes, that the coaching staff will offer you their full support to meet your goals: competitive sport or not. 10/10.
