Explore Jiu Jitsu Techniques“Coach Edwin is a highly-qualified black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitzu who truly cares about the art, as well as the progression of his students. I trained with Edwin for more than a year, and 100% still would be if I lived in the area. Before starting, I watched a little UFC, and had heard of BJJ but I had zero experience in practicing combat sports, and really didn’t have a clue what BJJ was. Now I’m all in, two comps deep, and am eager to train whenever I can – I really don’t think that would be the case if Edwin’s classes weren’t so engaging, and if the environment wasn’t so welcoming (even the other students go out of their way to help make their training partner better each session). Coach Edwin concentrates on the fundamentals and builds a foundation for his students, no matter what level they are. It’s apparent that he has experience teaching, and uses that to his advantage when coaching. He understands the fine details of each technique that he’s teaching, and can explain how you can improve in any given position by applying small adjustments to your game. When he starts explaining a guard, movement, take-down, submission, etc., the entire class is dialed into whatever he’s saying. He’s not one of those guys who will scoff at you for asking a question, or look down on you for not knowing something. He actually encourages you to ask questions, especially if you are a white belt. If you're considering starting BJJ or if you’re looking for a new place to train, I would highly recommend the Grappling Lab. Your Brazilian Jiu-Jitzu, confidence, and cardio will thank you!”
“I wasn’t looking for a gym to get buff or be some sort of MMA machine, I just wanted to feel better about myself body and with time about myself. I don’t think I knew that when I first started working with Edwin, but I discovered it during our time training together. I was a lousy student, perhaps I still am. But even after all these years he hasn’t given up on me. Still sees a fighter worth training. I think that’s incredible. Give his class try and know that even if you leave one day for what ever reason; money, time, or life, that crazy son of a gun will still welcome you back each and every time. No shame, just sweat and smiles. Good luck warriors and have fun.”
“Been working with Edwin from the start of my BJJ journey and it’s been a great experience. It’s been 8 months and Edwin’s knowledge is on a different level. It helps that he has a masters in motor control, so his class is structured to really help you learn and ingrain the movements. He pays attention to details from the warm up, drill time, to the physics of why one technique works better than another. Highly recommend for all levels, but especially for beginners looking for fundamentals.”
“As a blue belt, I've trained in various places, and the Grappling Lab truly stands out as an exceptional gym. This place is ideal for both beginners and intermediate grapplers, especially if you're looking for a grassroots vibe. What sets it apart is the relaxed, inclusive environment cultivated by Edwin and every member there--there are no meatheads here, just friendly faces all around. The instruction quality is top-notch. The main instructor is Edwin, who is a very knowledgeable black belt. He has a technical background (graduate studies in biomechanics?) that translates well into his instruction. His approach to teaching makes even complex techniques accessible to all skill levels. The affordability of the classes is just the cherry on top. Whether you're looking to start your grappling journey, enhance your skills, or compete, the Grappling Lab is definitely the place to be.”
“The gym is really grassroots. It's a super relaxed atmosphere with a great coach in Edwin. Not a lot of formality, as in no need to bow getting on the mat and Edwin doesn't go by Professor or anything. Great group of people as well, as everyone is friendly. Edwin explains technique in great detail -- he has an eye for common little mistakes in jitz like guard retention and grip fighting. His drills emphasizes correcting those mistakes and they make sense as a holistic lesson, rather than speed running a bunch of random techniques. He also emphasizes safety and cleanliness, which I appreciate.”
