Explore Jiu Jitsu Techniques“I had a fantastic experience training at Vortex Jiu Jitsu while visiting the DC area. Professor Kelly provided excellent instruction—clear, technical, and easy to apply. The entire group was incredibly welcoming and created a great atmosphere on the mats. I’m usually cautious about rolling at new gyms due to recent knee surgeries, but I felt completely safe here. The rolls were competitive but controlled—no ego or aggression, just solid, respectful training. My wife also trained during our visit and really enjoyed herself, which speaks to how inclusive and positive the environment is. I highly recommend this gym to anyone passing through or looking for a new place to train long-term.”
“I had an awesome time dropping in at Vortex Gym while visiting from SoCal. The instructor, Kelly, was super welcoming and let me join the class no problem. The other students, including some higher belts, were friendly and collaborative, meeting me at my level with challenging but not overwhelming rolls. They even helped me sharpen my game, especially using a grip as a pin and pivot point to get better positioning. Such a great tip! The facility itself is top-notch, with clean mats, full showers, locker rooms, and even steam rooms. Amazing vibe and a really positive experience. Highly recommend!”
“Vortex Jiu Jitsu is an incredible place to train, and Coach Kelly is a standout instructor. He is extremely detailed and thorough in his coaching, making sure every technique is broken down in a way that’s easy to understand. At the same time, he’s incredibly personable, creating a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone. Coach Kelly has cultivated an environment where all students—regardless of gender and/or experience level—feel comfortable, respected, and empowered to learn. The classes are well-structured and organized, making it an ideal place for both beginners and experienced practitioners. If you’re looking for a Jiu Jitsu gym and community in the DMV, Vortex is the place to be. Highly recommend!”
“I first met Kelly through one of the open mats he hosted in the park. And I’ve had the pleasure of training with him on a number of occasions. He is a very skilled black belt. The gym has great atmosphere and great people. Kelly and everyone else is very welcoming. Everyone is very technical and working on doing good jiu jitsu. It’s a great place to train and it has a great instructor in Kelly. Highly recommend.”
