What Our Students Say

Hear from our community about how training at our academy has impacted their lives.

Fargo Gabianni

"Dropped in for a class while on a trip. The head coach and atmosphere were amazing. It’s the exact kind of environment that encourages safety and fun. I’ll definitely drop in again when I’m in DC."

Samson Ghaffari

"This is one of the nicest academy’s I’ve visited in California. I travel quite a bit for work and this is easily one of the coolest spots. The locations cool factor is only exceeded by the instructors. They were knowledgeable, warm and welcoming. If you’re looking for a place to start learning BJJ in Sacramento THIS is the place! Word to the wise…arrive early to snag a good parking spot."

Alexandra Borden

"I'm clearly in the minority here posting a critical review, but after moving and going to a different BJJ gym, I realize I had a terrible experience here and I want to share it so the company knows and other people can read it too. For reference I went for about 6 months from Sept/Oct 2019 to March 2020 when everything shut down. I was going to noon classes for a while during the pandemic with Kermin. It was usually me and one other white belt for the times I I remember. Kermin would never choose me to demonstrate movements with or roll with me when it came time to spar. Since the other person in class with me was also a white belt, but male, I conclude it's because I'm a female. I also assume this because no other instructor behaved like this toward me. I rolled with Jared, Carl (I think), Dan when he taught a few times, and Sean. I was working with Nigel once during an evening class when I did something "wrong" I guess. He looked at me and said "well now why would you do that if I'm doing this (whatever move he had just done)?" Probably because I had only been doing jiu jitsu for a month or two. After that dismissive statement, I never went back to a class Nigel was teaching. Once there was a visiting teacher named Dave. That class was mostly fine until the end, when I said I was leaving. It was earlier than usual and no one else had gone. I made a comment about how I wasn't feeling well (I was getting "head rushes" and could hear a "whooshing" sound in my head. I didn't explain all that). Dave said "You seem to be moving fine to me". I guess I'm not capable of determining how I physically feel? Turns out I was getting those symptoms due to a sinus infection that caused fluid build up behind my ears and required steroids and antibiotics. The most egregious thing is that Sean at the time was getting a health degree of some sort and once in the middle of class (during sparring), he pulled me to the side and gave me completely unwanted and unwarranted nutrition advice (I'm overweight). I specifically remember him telling me to eat more vegetables. None of his business and wildly unprofessional. I also remember him giving a shallow speech about how he "used to be the guy who goes home and downs a bag of chips and 6 pack of beers" or something irrelevant that had absolutely nothing to do with me. He was just projecting his experiences onto me. If you're reading this Sean, you have no business giving out nutritional advice to people whose medical history you don't know. I would avoid this place at all costs."

Jeremy Ko

"Excellent instructors - Alfredo Atencio and others. Curriculum is well-organized, cutting-edge, and emphasizes high-level technique. Gym is incredibly warm and welcoming to newcomers and guests with a tight-knit group of regulars. Everyone is open to helping one another in a safe, focused, and disciplined environment. Great location right on H St corridor. Great range of class offerings from early morning to late evening..."
