What Our Students Say

Hear from our community about how training at our academy has impacted their lives.

RENE LONE STAR

"Everyone at Lone Star BJJ is Friendly , knowledgeable and are all willing to help and answer questions. They also have a wide range of different levels of experience, so if you are a first timer or a seasoned vet come by and say hi."

Erik

"This gym is amazing! From day one, I felt welcomed by everyone. It came highly recommended, and I’m so glad I listened. Dean and the black belt instructors are fantastic—knowledgeable, supportive, and great teachers. There’s no other place I’d rather train!"

Fredrick Moreno

"Enrolled my kids at the beginning of last summer in the jujitsu here, they are patient with the children and take the time to make sure everyone is learning the moves for the day. Children enjoy it because they add games and fun activities that get them to exercise with out noticing. I ended up enrolling in the adult class and enjoy it very much. Wish I could have found jujitsu at a younger age! I have heard from fellow classmates that have tried other gyms , that it’s much harder to start new because higher belts take advantage, I have found here it’s like a brotherhood that takes the time to teach what they are passionate about . Instructors are very helpful and knowledgeable."

Jake Carr

"If you’re looking for a normal hobby, try knitting. If you’re looking for something that will leave you gasping for air under a 200-pound human while also forming lifelong friendships, then Lonestar BJJ is where you need to be. When I first walked into this gym, I thought, “How hard can it be?” I quickly realized Jiu Jitsu is basically human chess, except the chess pieces are trying to choke you unconscious. I have been twisted, crushed, and humbled in ways I never imagined. But along the way, I’ve trained under some of the most legendary black belts in the game—each one a terrifying yet lovable villain in their own way. Big Jitsu Dean – The Ancient Warlock of Grappling Professor Dean has been doing Jiu Jitsu since dinosaurs roamed the earth. His hips are made of pure titanium, which means no one is ever sweeping him—he might as well be bolted to the mat. He has a thousand years of knowledge stored in his brain, and every time I think I’ve figured something out, he casually dismantles me like I’m a malfunctioning IKEA chair. Asking him a simple question about technique leads to a 20-minute deep dive on Jiu Jitsu philosophy, and by the end, I have more questions than when I started. Gypsy Jitsu Ian – The Wandering Executioner Ian has trained on every continent, probably fought in underground temples, and may or may not be immortal. He is a master of pain, capable of bending joints in ways doctors would not approve of. He once submitted me using only his legs while drinking a coffee. His guard game is so advanced, I’m fairly certain he has extra limbs hidden somewhere. Mexican Mike – The Grandmaster of Mexican Ground Karate Mike es un cinturón negro en Mexican Ground Karate, un arte antiguo y misterioso transmitido por los ancianos del grappling de Guadalajara. Consiste enteramente en desmantelar oponentes en silencio, barrerte sin esfuerzo como si estuviera limpiando un suelo de tierra, y cortar el césped con su cinturón negro—porque hasta el pasto sabe quién manda. Wristlocking-Sammy – The Collector of Souls (and Wrists) If wrists had nightmares, they’d feature Sammy. The man has built a reputation so legendary that people tap just thinking about rolling with him. One time, I went to shake his hand, and my wrist started tapping instinctively. If you ever leave your arm slightly out of position, he will take it, gift-wrap it, and hand it back to you in a sling. Violent Eric – The Silverback in a Gi If gravity could wear a gi, its name would be Eric. His pressure is so intense that scientists are currently studying it as a potential black hole. The first time he passed my guard, I thought I was experiencing a minor earthquake. Getting stuck under him is like being pinned by a moving boulder—except this boulder knows Jiu Jitsu and enjoys watching you suffer. Pastor Brian – The Holy Destroyer Brian looks like he was carved by Michelangelo, then sprinkled with holy water. His physique is a masterpiece, and his technique is even better. He will choke you out with angelic precision, then offer you spiritual guidance after class. Every time he submits me, I feel like I should apologize to the Lord for my sins. Nasty Nate – The Healer and the Hurter Nate is a nurse by day, submission machine by night. He breaks you, then fixes you. Rolling with him is like getting into a car accident and then being treated by the same guy who hit you. He’s smooth, technical, and somehow always two steps ahead. If I ever get seriously injured, I hope he’s the one both causing and curing it. Elusive Kevin – The Ghost of Jiu Jitsu Kevin is a myth, a legend, a rolling enigma. One day he’s here, snatching arms and breaking souls, and the next, he’s at a secret beach, doing Jiu Jitsu under a sunset. When he does appear, his movements are so smooth and unpredictable, it’s like trying to grapple a shadow. I hope to one day unlock the secret of his mysterious travels. I have never felt so broken yet so whole at the same time. If you value good friendship, great culture, and building new skills - Join Lonestar BJJ."
