What Our Students Say

Hear from our community about how training at our academy has impacted their lives.

Paul Anderson

"I've trained at Vital for the past 3 and half years doing just BJJ, and it has been one of the best experiences of my life, by far. The first time I walked in back in 2019, I asked the gym owner how long he recommends I sign up for. Now, in most instances, I think there's a lot of gym owners who would say "you should sign up for 3 months, or 6! You need to commit if you're going to be serious about this!" None of that happened. Instead, he told me "sign up for our 3 day trial. You *really* should see if this fits into your schedule before you make that commitment". And thank God he said that... At that time, my wife and I were not in a position for me to be going to the gym often enough to get my moneys' worth out of it. He didn't try to sell me on it, and the owner didn't try to lock me into some shady pricing to get me to stay. When my life was in a more stable place a year later in 2020, I came right back. Kyle, the gym owner, has really created an awesome gym culture that is focused on being welcoming towards everyone, and training hard. There hasn't been anyone I've trained with that I wouldn't hang out with outside of the gym, and we often do. We all clean the mats after every practice and maintain a clean environment. I didn't grow up doing martial arts, so I wasn't sure what to expect. This is not a "YES SENSEI!!!" type gym, you just call him "coach" or just "Kyle". It's hard to describe how chill of an atmosphere everyone creates here. I don't think I would stick around long if the overall attitude was hyper-serious all the time. The sport is hard enough that you get humbled and disciplined just by training. It's a fantastic group of people to train with, and an even better group of friends to hang out with. Bladden, one of the black belt instructors, has really hammered out the details of getting a robust "fundamentals of Jiu Jitsu" program going, with a fleshed out curriculum that rotates throughout the year that will get every beginner up to speed on what they need to know to be competitive, or defend themselves. I'm a pretty small dude at 5'3", so safety is always a priority of mine, and it's one that this gym helps maintain in their training environment. The talk of Jiu Jitsu enabling you to defeat "bigger, stronger, more aggressive opponents" is absolutely true. I'd tell anyone, regardless of age or sex to come in and at least see what the atmosphere of the gym is like."

Alex Diaz

"I've been training BJJ here over the past year about 2-3 a week. I had zero grappling experience prior to coming here. The community here is great! I've primarily trained under Steve and Jimmy, and both have been great instructors. The ability to walk someone as inexperienced as myself through certain techniques is truly a skill in itself. The instructors are aware that not everyone is there to compete, and people have careers and families, and that's okay. The students here are just as passionate about grappling as much as the coaches are. There are four purple belts at the moment who are super helpful with my growth here at the school, not to mention all the other students who help push each other to improve on their skills set. Ultimately, I'm glad I made the choice to come and train here, I can definitely see myself training here until I'm no longer able to physically."

Augusto Juarez

"I train here for the jiu-jitsu. I’m very picky with my gyms as social settings tend to give me anxiety. (It usually takes me 4-6 months before I’m able to join.) That said, this gym immediately made me feel comfortable with its very welcoming atmosphere. Everyone is friendly and accommodating, and the training environment is relaxed and very conducive to learning, whether you’re training to compete or as a hobby. Sparring feels very safe and you don’t feel like somebody is going to inadvertently hurt you (which is usually a concern for smaller people like me). There are training partners at every level, and the instruction is top-notch. Kyle is very knowledgeable, and doesn’t get caught-up with gym politics, encouraging everyone to cross-train. The mats are mopped every day after use, and the bathroom is very clean. Definitely one of the top gyms I’ve trained at."

Hunter Southerland

"I’ve had a great experience coming here for Jiu Jitsu, extremely knowledgeable instructors that are very detail oriented. I had never practiced Jiu Jitsu before coming here, my takedowns sucked, my ground game was even worse. After many hours of training with these guys I started to improve exponentially because they teach the basics extremely well. Great community and lots of friendly competition here. If you want to learn how to protect yourself and others, then I would highly encourage coming here."
