"We love WJJ, a true gem of Aurora! My younger son (5 years) had been asking to take karate lessons. The request led me to recall jiu jitsu classes I took in high school and the focus on self defense as opposed to hurting the other party. A friend mentioned that her son had been taking jiujitsu classes since he was 4 years old at a nearby studio that she highly recommended. I looked up WJJ of Aurora was pleasantly surprised to learn of the affordable starter package for kids. Dr. Quynh Nguyen made the enrollment process seamless and my son felt at home right away. He loved his first class and was very taken with how one of his classmates received a sticker in honor of respectful behaviors toward peers and senseis, and for mentoring newer members. I brought my older son (8 years) with me for pick up at the second session and he immediately asked if he could also join. We love the principles of jiu jitsu - respect, self control, hard work, and perhaps most importantly for young ones, delay of gratification - all foundational lessons that will shape my children’s outlook and work ethic for years to come. We adore the instructors Dr. Quynh, Coaches Jalen and Charles, and Professor Nobuo (5th in the world for his weight class!). They are knowledgable, skilled, patient, encouraging, and always make class fun for little ones. They do this while being firm, maintaining a safe environment, and employing consistent approaches for teaching children about self-discipline. Now we are 6 weeks and 2 kids in, and my husband is considering joining adult classes at the ripe young age of 41! If you are at all considering this for your children, try the starter package. "This place is amazing. There are classes for all belts/levels, and you get a sense of community really quickly. I was intimated by this sport (especially as a female athlete), but this is a very welcoming environment. Professor Nobuo and the WOJJ coaches know you by name and care about your progress. You get a lot of 1:1 time and their unique teaching styles enrich the learning experience. Can’t recommend it enough."
